In Minglu, a city where immortality is enforced and death is outlawed, the blood of Bai Mo — a girl with no registered identity — triggers a hidden "bone puppet substitution" recycling system. She and Ji Yunzhou, an officer of the stability bureau, go from hunting each other to being bound together, from solving cases to seizing power, and ultimately write "death and free choice" back into the foundational protocol of human civilization.
